ArtEZ Institute of the Arts is one of the leading universities for applied arts education. This position is founded on the quality and breadth of its courses, the social significance of its activities and its sheer scope. ArtEZ endeavours to contribute to the innovation of the arts, arts education and the development of arts theory. ArtEZ provides arts education that is recognised as being of a high quality as based on international standards. Education that enables its graduates to function at a high level in the professional practice of the fine arts, design, architecture, music and theater. Education that allows its graduates to contribute to not only the constant innovation of the arts but also the quality of our society.

(Per)Forming Identity

The ArtEZ Master of Music Program is connected to the Music Bachelor’s and offers students an optimally structured follow-up study. ArtEZ strives to help talented, broadly oriented and highly individual students to find their way in a varied professional practice. As based on the vision of ArtEZ School of Music, the Music Master’s focuses on (per)forming identity where young musicians will develop their own impression of the diverse and complex field of music. Confrontations with various aspects of professional practice will help them to formulate their own vision and to define their personal position within a number of relevant professional fields. Once you have passed your degree, you will have the right to use the internationally recognised Master of Music title.

Personal Profile

During this two-year program, ArtEZ School of Music confronts its Master’s students with a number of areas of professional practice that affect all musicians or that they at least need to be aware of. In this way, students are given an opportunity to discover facets of themselves, which they had not been previously familiar with, and to choose a profile that reflects their personal qualities and potential. This concerns not only the continued development of an artistic identity but also aspects such as education, stage presentation, communication, music programming, media wisdom, knowledge of the musical infrastructure, project management and working together in groups. In terms of developing your artistic identity, as a student you will be able to opt either for greater depth within your existing genre or for making excursions outside of your field and forging links with other genres and disciplines. In short, it’s all about (per)forming identity.

New Dutch Swing

Apart from the regular Jazz & Pop Master program, we also offer a specialized Master in improvisation, caressingly called “New Dutch Swing”, that emphasises improvisation as it is applied to a great deal of Dutch jazz. The “New Dutch Swing” teachers are Frank Gratkowski, Wilbert de Joode, Jacques Palinckx, Michael Vatcher, Wolter Wierbos and Michiel Braam.

Composition for Film and Theatre

Also offered is a specialized Master in Composition for Film and Theatre, with classes by our teachers Andries van Rossem, Rainer Quade and Matthias Wittwer and projects inside our brand new studio and outside of ArtEZ.

The Program is taught in English.
