Prerequisites
Completion of ArtEZ Big Collective 1. The ArtEZ Big Collective is compulsory for first, second and third year students of the main subjects cello, clarinet, flute, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, viola and violin and an elective for the students of those main subjects in the fourth year. All other students have to pass an audition before joining the ArtEZ Big Collective. Singers can not join as regular members of ArtEZ Big Collective, but if ArtEZ Big Collective needs singers for a specific project or song they will be asked during the year.

Aims
Acquiring and further developing the skills required to perform in, as well as compose and arrange for, large bands.

This module is related to the main subject, band modules and composing/arranging.
Content
This module focuses on experimentation and modern and contemporary repertoire.
Students learn to:
Compose and arrange for the available instrumentation; apart from being band members, students contribute to one or more compositions/arrangements.
Rehearse original compositions written by students.
Rehearse existing compositions arranged by students.
Rehearse jazz and pop repertoire adapted to the available instrumentation.
Improvise in a large band.
Develop rehearsal discipline.
Develop their ability to function within a band section and with other band sections.
Understand the importance and position of their solo contribution in relation to the band.
Understand collective timing.
Develop their sense of tuning.
Develop their understanding of dynamic shadings.
Develop their reading skills.
Become aware of and develop band tone.
Prepare and perform concerts.

Examination and assessment

Assessment by the instructor at the end of each semester.
Criteria
Students should have mastered the elements described under Contents.
Pass requirements
The student has completed this module if he is awarded a minimum grade of 5.5 at the end of the second semester.
Examination procedure
Students are assessed at the end of both semesters. Assessment at the end of the autumn semester is formative and expressed in terms of satisfactory/unsatisfactory. It indicates a student's progress in this module. No ECs are awarded and there is no resit. Modules can only be absolved, and ECs awarded, after the end of the spring semester. The end-of-semester assessments comprise evaluations of students' performance during the lessons and public performances.

Module summary

This module is intended to instruct students over the course of 30 weekly two-hour lessons in the skills required to function in a large band. The repertoire includes original compositions by students as well as existing pieces adapted to the available instrumentation.
