Aims
Students acquire the following skills and knowledge:
General awareness of the contours of the teaching profession.
Familiarity with various learning and teaching styles and ability to apply theoretical knowledge.
Awareness of the pros and cons of individual versus group lessons and choosing the appropriate mode(s) of teaching.
Creating lesson plans based on knowledge of the various modes of teaching/learning.
Experience in working with groups.
Basic skills required for working with heterogeneous bands/ensembles.
Ability to critique the contents and quality of a method.
Insight into the design and application of a curriculum.
Insight into their own pedagogical talents, interests and ambitions allows students to making reasoned study choices.
Demonstrating their views on education and their own role in the educational process.
Applying all the different learning aims listed above in actual educational settings.
Describing didactic situations (lessons, workshops, coaching sessions) and to assess them critically.

This module provides an introduction to Methodology as well as elective education modules.
Content
Lessons based on the topics listed under Aims, as well as assignments based on the materials discussed, complemented by lectures and workshops about various professional domains.
Mode(s) of instruction
Virtual classroom video conference with audio where max four students in four different locations and one instructor in another location, communicate by seeing each other, talking and listening to each other equally. The Instructor has access to a whiteboard, application sharing, desktop sharing and document sharing and may hand this privileges to any participants of the conference.
Apart from the video conference a high quality stereo audio stream is open at the same time via source connect. That way students and instructor can listen to music from any source of the group and talk about it simultaneously. Individual lessons where deemed necessary by the instructor.
To support the lessons video tutorial about the core information of the topics might be provided.
Due to more complex theoretical topics larger video conferences with more than four students will be provided. These classes have lecture character. All lectures are recorded and though available for students later on.

Examination and assessment

Mode(s) of assessment
In-class exercises and presentations and written assignments.
Criteria
The completed assignments demonstrate that students have sufficiently mastered the different elements and are able to discuss them adequately.
Pass requirements
The student has completed this module if he is graded "satisfactory", with a minimum class attendance of 80%.
Examination procedure
Completed assignments must be handed in for evaluation via e-mail, while presentations are given in class. Assignments are assessed by the teacher. The oral assessment will only be valid if carried out without interruption. The instructor decides wether or not the audition is carried out validly.

Module summary

This module is intended to provide students with a general knowledge of the different aspects of teaching. Students begin with an exploration of the educational field, discussing questions such as: Where does music education occur? What does the profession entail? Where can music teachers find employment and what activities and skills are required? Subsequently a number of subjects will be discussed, including but not limited to: learning styles, group lessons, ensemble playing, didactic models and method analysis. The module culminates in a final group assignment focused on all subjects that have been discussed.
